TENEBRAN AFFAIRS

Basir wasted no time letting the hammer fall. “Annassa, other matters awaiting your counsel cannot be delayed. We need to make plans concerning the situation in Tenebra.”

Lio gritted his teeth. There he stood before a most eminent gathering of Hesperines on the roof of the Notian House Annassa, with Hespera herself looking on from the nearby summit of Haima. And he asked the least responsible, most undiplomatic question of his career. “Can it wait?”

The elders considered him.

“Cassia only just learned that her sister really is alive. Can’t everything else wait for one moment?”

Basir answered him. “Orthros only just learned there is a real possibility a contender for the throne of Tenebra is alive. Can our preparations for the consequences wait?”

Cassia let out a breath, her hand tightening around Lio’s. He sensed the strong words she wanted to say run through her mind before she chose more diplomatic ones. “I know it is the envoys’ duty to consider such matters, but it is my duty to find my sister and ensure she is safe and well before a throne from her distant past even enters the conversation.”

Every defensive throb of her aura gratified Lio. “Cassia and I have already agreed that our first conversation with Solia will concern her coming to Orthros with us to take her rightful place in our bloodline.”

“She belongs here, with us,” Cassia said.

Mak crossed his arms. “Of course she does.”

“Clearly,” Lyros agreed, “Orthros’s goal should be to offer Sanctuary to Solia.”

It was a relief, after all these secret circles, for his Grace and his Trial brothers to stand with him.

“A moment, Basir,” Uncle Argyros requested of his friend. His silent support for Lio hummed in their Union. “If our attendees from the Eighth Circle would prefer to discuss these matters at a later time, it is perfectly all right for you four to retire for the night.”

Cassia and Lio looked at each other. He understood her unspoken request, and he knew the elders would understand when he swept a veil around the four of them.

Cassia was strung tight as a bowstring with tension and much too quiet. Lio recognized the fraught currents of her aura that arose when she was feeling too many things at once, and was still sorting through it all.

“Are you ready to talk about this?” Lio asked.

“I don’t know,” she admitted.

Lio’s uncle had given him the opportunity to make that decision for himself weeks ago. Cassia must now do the same with an even more demanding audience. “Let’s take a moment and think it over.”

Mak grimaced. “Far be it from me to drag us into a political discussion, but it’s clear the envoys think this concerns the safety of Orthros.”

Lyros nodded. “We came to support you, Cassia, and we’re prepared to stay and represent the Stand with Nike.”

“And to support Father.” Mak glanced at Lio. “He’s been buried in veiled dispatches about all this. You’ve probably seen the pile on his desk when you come for coffee. But you two are on leave.
